Alex Permann is most likely going to make sure that he pays attention to details moving forward. Permann experienced a roller coaster of emotions before the Missouri Valley Conference championship game this Sunday, and because he didn’t pay close enough attention to a set of rules he cost himself $50,000.
Permann, a 24-year-old student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, was selected to participate in a chance to win $50,000 before a game if he was able to make a layup, free throw, 3-pointer and half-court shot all in 24 seconds. Permann stepped onto the court confident, but a little distracted for obvious reasons.
“When I hit that shot,” Permann said, “I was thinking about 50 grand.”
Permann nailed the layup, the free throw, and he went to half court where he drained his first attempt. At that moment he thought he was $50,000 wealthier. Unfortunately, Permann completely forgot to shoot the three pointer thus disqualifying him from collecting the big pay day.
“I guess I don’t listen too good,” Permann said.
According to USA Today, as a consolation prize Permann was awarded ‘four tickets for life to the MVC tournament and four VIP passes and a three-day hotel stay in St. Louis for next year’s tournament.’
“I’ve got to tell you, I’m just sick,” MVC associate commissioner Jack Watkins said of Permann losing his jackpot.
“Either way, it’s been awesome. I just can’t believe I made it,” said Permann
