The Seattle Seahawks are the reigning Super Bowl champions and they’re being treated as such by the oddsmakers as the team are being given 5-1 odds to win it all again in 2014.
The offense didn’t change much from last year’s squad for better and worse. The team still has Russell Wilson and he’s looked as sharp as ever so far in preseason. Marshawn Lynch will be back to take hand-offs from Wilson but he’s 28 and has a lot of carries so how the Seahawks monitor his usage will be something to watch heading into the season. The Seahawks also lost wide receiver Golden Tate and they’ll be rolling the dice with Percy Harvin to make up for the loss. As has been the case with Harvin since his Vikings days, if he can stay healthy, it’s a good move by the Seahawks. The only bad news for Seattle is that they’re returning an offensive line that struggled to protect Wilson at times during the season. A lot will hinge on the health of Russell Okung, who has missed 19 games in the past four years.
But all eyes will be on the defense, which should be incredibly formidable again this year. It will be headlined by Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas but one can’t forget about Kam Chancellor and Byron Maxwell should fill the void left by the likes of Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond rather nicely. Seattle’s defense will be among the best in the league (if not THE best). It may not be as dominant as it was last year but they are probably still the elite defense in the NFL.
