The Philadelphia Eagles will look to build on its strong finish to the 2013 season with a repeat performance under head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly’s offensive schemes took a little while to gel with his roster but there is little arguing with the final results: 2nd overall in offense and 4th in scoring. The weak point of the team is the defense which ranked a dismal 29th.
On offense, the Eagles should be happy if they manage to repeat their performance from a year ago. While it’s incredibly doubtful that Nick Foles repeats his staggering TD-INT ratio from last season (27-2), if he’s able to limit his mistakes the scheme around him should allow Foles to have another solid year. The Eagles did lose deep threat DeSean Jackson and it’s not likely that Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin will fill that void entirely. On the plus side, LeSean McCoy is back and should be just as productive as he was last season. The Eagles also added Darren Sproles who should be used very well within the Eagles versatile offense.
As for the defense, the Eagles were awful last year and they didn’t do that much to try and improve the roster over the offseason. They added Malcolm Jenkins and Nolan Carroll to address their weaknesses in the secondary but both moves feel slightly underwhelming considering the lack of talent that the Eagles are fielding on the defensive side of the ball.
Luckily for the Eagles, the team plays in the NFC East, a division which looks to be fairly weak as none of the teams did much to improve their roster dramatically. Kelly is an exciting presence and there’s little reason to believe that the Eagles won’t be able to seriously compete for the NFC East crown.
The odds of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl are currently 25-1.
