The Miami Dolphins made news for all the wrong reasons in 2013 and the team spent a good part of the offseason trying to atone for those on-the-field and off-the-field sins which were perpetuated by its struggling offensive line.
Ryan Tannehill will be relied on to improve in 2014 but he’ll have to be put in a position to succeed first. Miami brought in Knowshon Moreno to help take some pressure off of Tannehill but what really matters is the offensive line. The team brought in Branden Albert, Jason Fox and Shelley Smith in free agency and drafted offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James in the first round of the NFL draft to replace John Jolly, Tyson Clabo, Richie Incognito, Jonathan Martin and Bryant McKinnie. The loss of those five won’t mean much from a talent standpoint but it will be a tall order for all these newcomers to gel quickly.
As for the defense, the Dolphins took some steps to improve their defense by bringing in Cortland Finnegan and Louis Delmas. Those moves should give the Dolphins’ secondary a boost, even if it is likely to be a marginal one. The team’s pass rush led by Cameron Wake will be the key to the Dolphins’ defensive fortunes. Expect the defense to look a little better and the offense to look a tad worse thanks to all the new names up front.
