Everything that could have gone wrong for the Houston Texans, somehow ended up happening. Matt Schaub imploded, Arian Foster came up injured and the Texans ended up with the number one draft pick. The team spent the offseason looking for a complete makeover. They brought in Bill O’Brien, and signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to be the starting quarterback while also trading for Ryan Mallett. While the Texans lost Ben Tate, Foster is healthy and the hope is that Fitzpatrick will be able to find a discontented Andre Johnson and Foster enough to move the ball. If that sounds slightly underwhelming, that’s because it probably is.
Luckily, the Texans defense should make up for the team’s offensive deficiencies. The team used its first overall draft pick to select Jadeveon Clowney and the prospect of him and newly-extended J.J. Watt lining up on the same defensive line should give opposing offenses nightmares for years to come. Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson man a solid secondary so a lot will rest on whether the linebackers, especially Brian Cushing, can stay healthy.
The Texans will undoubtedly be better in 2014 but whether they can make a playoff push is an entirely different story. The AFC South is weak and the Texans defense matches up well against their main competition’s offense (the Colts) but its a quarterback driven league and the Texans don’t have a great talent under center.
The Texans currently have 42-1 odds of winning the Super Bowl.
