In one year, Marc Trestman turned the Bears from a defensive-minded team to an offensive juggernaut led by the majestic Jay Cutler and wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrery. However, as fate would have it, as the Bears offense rose to great heights, their defense sunk.
The Bears offense is outstanding but Chicago will be gambling against Jay Cutler’s injury history more than ever before. With Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffrery and Brandon Marshall, Cutler has an embarrassment of riches surrounding him but he’ll have to stay on the field to make use of them. However, Cutler hasn’t played a full 16 game season since 2009. The Bears don’t even have Josh McCown as a backup plan for Cutler anymore. Instead, the team has Jimmy Clausen and David Fales, and neither inspires much confidence.
The Bears defense remains a mess despite Chicago’s best efforts to give the unit a face lift. The team lost an aging star in Julius Peppers and replaced him with an aging star in Jared Allen. The Bears also brought in LaMarr Houston, Willie Young and Trevor Scott but the linebackers outside of Lance Briggs aren’t anything special and the secondary’s fate rests in the hands of rookie Kyle Fuller as the Bears did little to outside of that to address their defensive woes in the backfield, other than sign Ryan Mundy and Danny McCray.
The NFC North is going to be a fairly competitive division again. The Bears have a chance at making the playoffs but the shadow of Aaron Rodgers looms large and the NFC is full of talented teams, some of which will inevitably miss the playoffs. If Cutler can buck his injury history, the Bears are a threat based off the offense alone. If Cutler misses any amount of time, the Bears are in deep trouble.
