The Atlanta Falcons shocked the NFL for all the wrong reasons in 2013. After being a playoff contender for three consecutive seasons, the Falcons cratered last year due to injuries and a lack of depth on the roster.
On offense, the biggest change is at tight end. Tony Gonzalez retire, which means that Matt Ryan won’t have the most reliable tight end in the history of the NFL to act as his safety blanket. The good news is that both Julio Jones and Roddy White will be back after both suffered injuries last year. As for the run game, Steven Jackson seems like he’s near done with his playing career and it’ll be up to rookie Devonta Freeman to step up and supplant Jackson in the depth chart. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the defense isn’t likely to improve much. The team did draft promising rookie Ra’Shede Hageman and they signed Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai to improve the defensive line but the unit as a whole is aging. If the Falcons are to return to the NFL’s elite, it’ll be because the offense is able to stay healthy for the year. If Julio Jones or Roddy White see their 2014 seasons cut short by injury, then a repeat of 2013 is suddenly in the cards.
