Despite enjoying a winning season under head coach Bruce Arians, the Arizona Cardinals missed the playoffs due to playing in the ridiculously stacked NFC West. The team’s make up will be similar to last year but unless the Niners or Seahawks slip, the Cardinals may end up on the outside looking in once again. The Cardinals did manage to cover the spread on 11 of 16 matches last year and the oddsmakers are similarly dubious about the Cards’ chances this year as well.
On offense, the Cardinals are coming back to Carson Palmer. Palmer was more or less the player that people have come to expect. He took turns throwing touchdowns and picks while the defense kept the Cardinals in the game. Luckily for the Cards, Andre Ellington looks to take on a bigger role this year and Larry Fitzgerald still has something left in the tank despite having a down year last season. The Cards also brought in Ted Ginn to add some speed to their roster.
The defense is a little worrying. Arizona lost Karlos Dansby to free agency and Daryl Washington for the season and the only consistent pass rusher on the roster is Calais Campbell. The secondary is particularly strong though. Patrick Peterson is one of the few cornerbacks who can trash talk with Richard Sherman and back it up. The Cards also added Antonio Cromartie and they will get back talented young player Tyrann Mathieu soon. In other words, the defense will be the high-point of the team but it will likely take a step-back as well.
In all, the Cardinals look slightly worse than they did last year and they’ll need help to reach the postseason.
The Cardinals odds of winning the Super Bowl rest at 44-1.
