Before Wednesday, the largest fish that Kai Rizzuto ever caught weighed in at a hefty 55 pounds.

That all changed over the course of a half hour. That is how long it took Rizzuto to catch a 1,058 pound marlin off the coast of Hawaii last week. The catch weighed only 300 pounds less than the world record (which, coincidentally, was caught just ten miles from where Rizutto nabbed his catch in 1982).

Rizzoto’s marlin (which was dead by the time he, his grandfather and four other people were able to haul it onto the boat) was 14 feet long. Kai’s grandfather Jim states that the fish will be used to feed people.

A lot of people.

He estimates it can feed “a couple of hundred people.”

“Blue marlin is a high-quality protein. They have been eaten here forever, so when we get a very special fish like this, you turn it over to a fish cutter that makes sure everyone who wants a piece gets a piece.”

I’m sure anyone who wants a piece will be able to get one. Just look at the size of this fish.
