After the Patriots beat the Ravens last Saturday, former New England Patriots tight end and current radio host Jermaine Wiggins nearly came to blows with Steve Smith over something that Wiggins had once said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz show.
According to Marc Bertrand of the Felger & Mazz show, Wiggins (who used to be a teammate of Smith’s when both played for the Panthers) had called Smith a bully on their show before.
“Wiggy, once upon a time on this very program, called Steve Smith a bully, saying he’s a bad locker-room guy,” Bertrand said on Monday’s show.
Apparently lacking self-awareness, Smith confronted Wiggins after Saturday’s game and reportedly cussed Wiggins out in front of Wiggins’ wife and kids and then threatened to fight the radio host for, well, calling Smith a bully.
Scott Zolak, who does radio broadcast work for the Patriots, described how the situation unfolded.
“So [Smith] sees Wiggy and he’s like, ‘Yo, what’s up?’ [Wiggy] says, ‘Hey, Steve, what’s up?’ [Smith] is like, ‘No, dude, what the [bleep’s] up?’
“Wiggy’s like, ‘Aw, now, now you’re swearing in front of my kids.’ “(Bertrand had said Wiggins was in the area with his wife and two sons.) “And he’s like, ‘You gotta step up.’ And then it starts getting nasty.
“Steve’s like, ‘Man, you called me a bully. What’s up with that? You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to [bleep] you, right now.'”
Luckily, no actual punches were thrown as security personnel stepped in before things spiraled out of control. Still, one would think that there are better ways to confront bullying accusations than trying to fight the very guy who called you a bully in the first place.
