The Kansas City Chiefs were hurt by a controversial offensive offsides penalty on wide receiver Kadarius Toney that nullified a would-be go-ahead touchdown late in the game against the Buffalo Bills. But after the game, the officials are standing by the call.
During a postgame press conference, referee Carl Cheffers defended the decision to throw the offensive offside flag instead of giving the Chiefs a warning, arguing that Kadarius Toney was so far offside that it was “beyond a warning.”
“Yes, ultimately, if they looked for alignment advice, certainly we are going to give it to them,” Cheffers said in the press conference, according to Pro Football Talk. “But ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up. And, certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball. So, we would give them some sort of a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.”
Obviously, the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t agree with the call. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was particularly angry after the game, arguing that the referees shouldn’t make such a big call in that situation.
