Trying to make a buck off the 2014 NFL season? If so, Bovada just released their NFL MVP odds. While the frontrunners are who you would expect, there are a few surprising selections.
As expected, Peyton Manning is the favorite at 3/1 odds. Tom Brady (9/1), Drew Brees (11/2), Aaron Rodgers (15/2), and Andrew Luck (16/1) trail the leader. Again, none of those numbers raise any eyebrows. But, here is where it starts to get iffy.
The next ranked players are Jay Cutler and Matt Stafford, each with 20/1 odds. Honestly, I have no problem with Cutler’s standing. I think it’s safe to say the Bears are going to be a trendy pick in the NFC. The issue with the team is the defense, not the offense. In the Bears’ first season running Marc Trestman’s offense, their quarterbacks put up the following numbers:
- 4,450 yards
- 32 touchdowns
- 7.7 average yards per attempt
- 96.9 quarterback rating
While those numbers don’t solely belong to Jay Cutler — Josh McCown had a career season when Cutler went down with multiple injuries — they demonstrate the potential for Cutler in Trestman’s offense. If Cutler can stay healthy, and if the Bears’ offense can improve in year two in Trestman’s offense, Cutler could shock some people.
As far as Matt Stafford, I’m a little bit skeptical, though he does have a multitude of weapons to throw to. Perhaps what is the most surprising is that players like Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Calvin Johnson, and Matt Ryan were given worse odds than Stafford.
