Melvin Gordon has one of the top selling NFL jerseys this summer after being selected in the first round by the San Diego Chargers. His No. 28 jersey sat among top picks Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston and was within the top three of all running backs for the month of June. At least a few thousand of those jerseys will be worn by Chargers fans for their August 13th preseason opener against Dallas and the same will be the case for their Week 1 home game against Detroit. However, Gordon’s mom, Carmen, will not be donning one of those jerseys while she watches her son reinvigorate the team’s rushing attack.
According to ESPN‘s Eric D. Williams, Carmen routinely attends San Diego practices and is constantly giving her son feedback about his on-field performance, with daily reminders about a couple things in particular.
Be patient. This is a new game, and he’s got to learn it. This is what they do for a living, so you either have to sink or swim.
Seems innocent enough, right? Well, that’s not all she’s telling him. Carmen also said she will not wear his jersey until he proves himself.
You’ve got to show me a little something, but it won’t be this year. So you might see me in the stands, but I won’t have the jersey on. I did the same thing in college because I just want to hear what people are saying.
Gordon is a trendy pick for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and if he’s able to bring that home while giving the Chargers a playoff boost, maybe his mom will rep the No. 28 jersey in 2016.
