The Buffalo Bills beat the Detroit Lions in Detroit on Sunday by a score of 17-14 so the fact that a fan may have shined a laser pointer at Bills’ players eyes in order to throw them off their game won’t garner as much attention as it probably would have had the Lions won.
Yes, a green laser pointer was apparently shined into the eyes of Bills’ holder Colton Schmidt when the team was attempting to kick a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter of Sunday’s contest. Kicker Dan Carpenter missed the kick but he blamed the laser pointer for interfering with Schmidt’s vision:
“It was shining on Colton on the hold,” Carpenter said after the Bills’ victory Sunday. “As far as that goes, I understand the NFL security is looking into it to see if they can figure anything out.”
The Lions issued a statement following the game, acknowledging the Bill’s complaints:
“We are aware of the reports from today’s game involving the use of a laser, and we have been in contact with NFL security regarding this issue.
“Lasers are a prohibited item at Ford Field.“While Ford Field security was unable to identify anyone using a laser at today’s game, any future occurrence will be dealt with accordingly.”
Interestingly enough, one Twitter user tweeted that they were responsible for the laser pointer antics. Perhaps realizing the gravity of the situation, they deleted their account afterwards. Deadspin was able to grab some screenshots though:
Not cool, Marko Beslach.
