The Chicago Bears are looking to get things turned around and become contenders in the NFC North, which is emerging as the league’s toughest division. The Bears brought in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to serve as the team’s new head coach in hopes that he can help maximize the potential of young quarterback Caleb Williams.
Now, Williams is speaking about what he wants to achieve in his partnership with Johnson.
“Ben Johnson is great and it’s not just Ben Johnson,” Williams said, per Ryan Garcia of Empire Sports Media. “We have a young staff slash old staff and we have a bunch of experience, bunch of new energy provided by the coaches and players. It’s been awesome. Ben Johnson, he uses some choice words every day toward me. He’s tough and I love him. He’s awesome. It’s great being around him.
“We hang out in his office and we just have lunch sometimes, things like that. We’re building this bond and relationship to be able to last a while. I know Bears fans, it’s year after year typically, or every other year, where coaches and quarterbacks specifically are in and out and our goal is to be here for a while.”
Fans reacted to the shocking news that Williams is already so bought in on his new head coach.
“I think the Bears have a real shot at building something under Johnson and Williams. I could be dead wrong of course—because it’s the Bears,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I think we see a great year 2 out of Caleb. Maybe not some crazy mvp season or anything but definitely some inporovement, how could you not with the coaching upgrade. Might be the biggest glow up of all time,” one fan added.
“That’s cute, I hope they get married and have a bunch of Caleb’s running around,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Williams can take a leap in his second season.
