Typically, teams don’t put their starting quarterbacks on the field for much of the preseason in order to protect them and make sure they’re healthy for the regular season. But given that the Chicago Bears will be starting Caleb Williams as a rookie, it sounds like they’ll be giving him some reps this preseason.
While the team has not yet made any formal decision about when or how much Caleb Williams will play this preseason, it is quite clear that the team has decided he will play this preseason.
“Haven’t made any decisions but we certainly want to get him some reps,” Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said according to ESPN. “I know the guys last year [2023 first-round QBs C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson] got 45 to 55 reps in terms of those guys. We’re looking right in that range. We’ll see, but again, it’s always week to week because you have to see what the health of your line is and where everybody is. But certainly, all those exposures are equally as valuable.”
The Bears open their preseason at the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on Aug. 1. We’ll have to see whether or not Williams makes his Bears debut then.
