UMass and Boston College will meet for the first time as FBS teams at Gillette Stadium on Saturday and it seems like UMass has fired the first shot in what it obviously hopes will be a heated rivalry.
It was reported on Tuesday that a maroon no. 3 UMass jersey was draped over Boston College’s Doug Flutie statue and a photo of the UMass-ed Flutie was trumpeted by Gold Group, a marketing firm which works with… wait for it… UMass football.
Officially, no one has taken responsibility for the hi-jinks.
A photo of the stunt was taken and distributed by the Gold Group, an eastern Massachusetts sports marketing firm that works to promote UMass football. There was no word on whether or not they were behind the statue’s temporary attire. Calls to the Gold Group weren’t answered after normal business hours.
The stunt appeared to have its desired effect as UMass fans shared the picture hundreds of times on social media.
“That’s pretty cool,” UMass junior quarterback Blake Frohnapfel said. “It’s pretty funny.”
While UMass’s quarterback may be amused, a certain former Boston College quarterback is less than pleased as he tweeted today:
