If you haven’t heard the story of Welles Crowther yet, you absolutely need to make some time to do that. ESPN did a fantastic Outside The Lines piece on Crowther, a 24-year-old New York equity trader who helped saved the lives of numerous strangers inside the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2011, and you can watch it above.
Crowther died on 9/11, but his story and his courage continue to live on. His penchant for wearing a red bandana was well-known during his days as Boston College lacrosse player (he would wear it underneath his helmet) and it’s also what led to him being identified by those whose lives he saved. Crowther wore the red bandana to protect himself from the smoke while he helped rescue others, losing his own life in the process.
That red bandana has become synonymous with Crowther and his heroism, and Boston College will be using it to honor their former student athlete this weekend. The BC Eagles football team will wear these ‘Red Bandana’ uniforms when they take on USC on Saturday:
It’s a pretty fantastic tribute for one of their own, and a guy who truly deserves to be honored.
