Sorry, eternal optimists, but college athletics is not getting less pricey or lucrative anytime soon, or ever. As officials, administrators and ADs across the country continue to navigate this unprecedented period of student-athlete benefits, they are also facing increasing tuition and fees expenses. Major athletic departments spend millions of dollars in student tuition, fees, room and board every year. One item that is oftentimes overlooked is in-state versus out-of-state students
Some institutions have substantially higher tuition for out-of-state students, while some (private) do not and others are somewhere in-between with moderate differences. Although it does not dramatically skew budgets, this difference can equal hundreds of thousands of dollars for some departments. College basketball might not contribute heavily to that figure, as it is one of the smallest NCAA sports in terms of roster size and scholarship limits, but the numbers do add up.
With that in mind, the Week 17 Re-Rankings look at the most expensive schools for out-of-state tuition and fees (2013-14 academic year). We have ranked all current Top 25 teams, starting with the dirt cheap institutions for out-of-state students and rolling through to the pricey, mostly private, schools. You might be surprised to see where a few schools land in these rankings.
