The Missouri Tigers seemingly burst out of nowhere last year. After finishing the 2013 season as the champs of the SEC East Division, the Tigers are now on a lot of people’s radar as we head into the 2014 season. However, with a lot of key players departing the program, head coach Gary Pinkel has his work cut out for him.
On offense, the team will be relying on the arm of Maty Mauk. Mauk may not repeat last year’s feat of only throwing two picks but he has a propensity to make plays and he’ll have some experienced running backs in Russell Hansbrough and Marcus Murphy backing him up. With the wide receiver position being a questionable area of talent, much will hinge on whether Mauk caught lightning in a bottle last year or if he’s the real deal. As for the defense, the defensive line should be pretty good but there are questions behind the front. The linebackers will be mostly unproven and the depth of the secondary isn’t great. Given all of that, it will be surprising to see the Tigers repeat the success they enjoyed last season. The team managed to shock a lot of people last year and they won’t be afforded the same luxury this season.
The Missouri Tigers are currently getting 77-1 odds to win the National Championship.
