The Dallas Stars defeated the Florida Panthers 2-0 at home on Friday night, but they may have endured a serious loss in the process. Stars leading point-scorer Tyler Seguin appeared to suffer a significant lower-body injury in the third period after taking a low hit from Panthers defenseman Dmitri Kulikov.
Kulikov attempted to throw a hip check on Seguin as he carried the puck into the Panthers zone, but the Russian defenseman clipped Seguin at the knees and sent him tumbling to the ice in agony. Seguin immediately grabbed for his right knee and headed straight to the locker room, barely putting any weight on the leg in the process. He didn’t return to the game.
Meanwhile, Kulikov was given a five-minute major for clipping as well as a game misconduct and could face supplemental discipline from the league as a result of the dangerous hit.
Here’s another look at the hit, as well as some freeze frames that highlight point of contact:
Update: Seguin will reportedly miss 3-6 weeks with a knee injury as a result of the hit. The league has also suspended Kulikov for four games.
