Often discussed in hockey is “the code” of unwritten rules that players are supposed to follow in order to respect the game and their opponents on the ice. Included among the items in “the code” is the expectation that two players who have a problem with each other shall hash out their issues by dropping the gloves and engaging in a clean, fair fight on the ice.
Well, Joe Grimaldi of the Edinburgh Capitals (EIHL) must have skipped that chapter while studying “the code,” because he seriously embarrassed himself by pulling some dirty tricks after being challenged to a fight during a recent game.
After throwing a big hit, Grimaldi was challenged to a fight by Maxime Lengelier-Parent of Nottingham. Instead of dropping the gloves and answering for his actions in respectable fashion, Grimaldi used his stick to spear Parent in the gut, appearing to rebuff his offer to fight. Parent didn’t give up in his quest for justice, and it looked like Grimaldi was going to give in and put up a fair fight.
But then, after dropping the gloves, Grimaldi took off his helmet and hurled it at Parent’s face before tackling him to the ice. Pretty ridiculous.
As a result of his antics, Grimaldi was hit with a bevy of penalties, including a check to the head minor, a spearing major, a fighting (or, more appropriately, a “fighting”) major, and multiple misconducts that ended his night. Oh, and the Capitals immediately released him from the team following the game.
The good news is that he’ll have plenty of time to brush up on “the code” while he’s unemployed.
Update: The EIHL has suspended Grimaldi 18 games as a result of his actions.
