At the 2014 World Selects Invitational hockey tournament in Budapest, Hannah Bates, playing for West Coast Selects, was nearly decapitated when Svetlana Starovoytova of Russia’s Spartak team got more than a little violent with Bates.
(Watch with sound.)
Incredibly, Bates wasn’t seriously injured and even poked fun at the incident via Twitter.
Shoutout to Warrior for making Russian proof helmets that saved me from a concussion. https://t.co/VoTcjq3SvQ

Starovoytova was ejected from the game, though she clearly made her presence felt when she was allowed on the ice.
