Though it didn’t officially count as an assist on the scoreboard, Hapoel Jerusalem got a huge helping hand from a referee during a crucial late-game possession against Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv this week.
With about half a minute left to go in a one-point game, a Hapoel player drove the lane and -when he couldn’t find a clear shot in the paint – attempted to kick it out to a teammate on the perimeter.
Unfortunately, the pass was a little off target and didn’t look like it was going to find it’s intended target behind the arc. However, the ball DID find a referee standing nearby and deflected right into the hands of the waiting shooter, who buried the trey to put Hapoel up 87-85, the eventual final score.
