According to Rory McIlroy Tiger Woods will never again dominate golf the way he did a decade ago. While praising Woods’ play from 2001, McIlroy made it perfectly clear that he doesn’t expect Tiger to hit that level again:
We saw the best of Tiger in 2000 and 2001. I don’t think golf can be played any better than that
McIlroy also suggested that while Tiger was playing well back then, the real reason for his dominance was weak competition.
He didn’t even need to play that well to win tournaments – he won the US Open by 15 shots, the Open by eight – so I think we’ve seen the best of him but that’s not to say to he won’t win again.
Just to make certain there was no misunderstanding Rory made it perfectly clear he doesn’s think Tiger has what it takes against today’s competition.
But (getting back to number one) will be difficult for him because the fields are so much deeper.
Eldrick certainly hasn’t done anything to make the world think he’s about to start winning majors again but if and when Tiger gets his game back you better believe he’ll be looking to go head-to-head with Rory.
