If you’ve ever owned any video game console, there is a strong chance that you have a Grand Theft Auto game. That is how pervasive it is in everything video games. Now an analyst has done the math on how many units have been sold. It is absolutely staggering when you put together how much they have made off the game, in fact, it is record-breaking.
Since it’s launch in 2013, “GTA V” has sold 90 million units, putting its total haul for publisher Take-Two Interactive Inc. TTWO, +0.90% in the neighborhood of $6 billion—far above the success of blockbuster movies like “Star Wars” or “Gone With The Wind,” which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA V’s neighborhood, said Cowen analyst Doug Creutz, estimating those sales might add up to $1 billion to the films’ totals.
That puts it on levels that aren’t seen on modern levels of media. Even from anecdotal evidence, you will see many people with the game and still playing. When you have a virtually limitless map, there are always going to be new things to explore. Add that to an online experience that is second to none, people are going to keep playing. It doesn’t appear to be repeatable but that doesn’t mean others won’t try.
Mind you, the info is for one installment, not for a franchise of movies or video games. That alone makes this a once in a lifetime occurrence. You will definitely be able to find a game or two inside your local store.
Get playing.
