Back on January 24th, 2011, a campus safety information session was held at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto. One of the Toronto Police in attendance said “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” This didn’t resonate well with the students, staff, and general public. As a means of protesting such talk, SlutWalk Toronto was born. Wait why was it born? Here’s what the sluts have to say:
“We are tired of being oppressed by slut-shaming; of being judged by our sexuality and feeling unsafe as a result. Being in charge of our sexual lives should not mean that we are opening ourselves to an expectation of violence, regardless if we participate in sex for pleasure or work. No one should equate enjoying sex with attracting sexual assault.”
I hear ya. And so this past weekend they rallied.
