United States sports have been on an unbelievable tear this Summer, beginning with this summer’s Paris Olympics, where the US tallied 126 medals, good for 35 more than second-place China. And it seems like that dominance picked right up again on the tennis court.
The last tennis Grand Slam of the year, New York’s US Open, is the latest international sporting event where Americans are excelling. United States tennis stars Francis Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, two of the tennis’ youngest stars, are set to face each other on the court Friday in a semifinal match with an appearance in the final on the line.
Both players are American, meaning that regardless of who wins, Sunday’s final will feature an American player for the first time since 2005. It’s hard to believe, but an American hasn’t won the men’s final since Andy Roddick was crowned the champion in 2003.
The women’s side of the tournament also features two Americans in the semis, as Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro have advanced as well.
Needless to say, America has sent a pretty clear message to the world with this dominance, and the sports world had a lot to say about it.
