Recently Apple and Google have come under scrutiny for their handling of users’ location privacy; however, the mobile carriers such as Verizon and AT&T also have detailed logs of customers’ movements. In an effort to be as “transparent” as possible, Verizon will begin putting surgeon’s general style warning stickers on the phones it sells. The illustration of the warning label says the following:
Remove before use. This device is capable of determining its (and your) physical, geographical location and can associate this location data with other customer information. To limit access to location information by others, refer to the User Guide for Location settings and be cautious when downloading, accessing or using applications and services.
Verizon holds customers’ information which includes location details for seven years, AT&T from several days to give years, and Sprint for three years.
