In a report today by the Wall Street Journal, Sprint will sell the iPhone 5, joining major carriers AT&T and Verizon who will also have the device for consumer consumption sometime in mid-October. The addition of Sprint to the U.S. carrier lineup will add over 52 million potential subscribers for Apple to sell to. Although not quite as large as Verizon’s 106 million subscribers and AT&T’s 99 million, Sprint’s 52 million is nothing to scoff at.
Similar to Verizon’s CDMA iPhone, Sprint’s CDMA network will require the phone to be CDMA-capable. More likely than not the fifth-generation iPhone will be dual-mode GSM/CDMA. At the point Sprint begins selling the iPhone 5, they will also sell the CDMA iPhone 4, the same that is currently sold by Verizon.
So who’s left of the the “Big Four” mobile carriers? T-Moble.
