Last week Sony’s Playstation Network was compromised and user information including names, passwords, and addresses were stolen. It may actually be worse. Security researchers at Trend Micro say they have seen discussions on several hacker forums indicating that the hackers were attempting to sell a list of credit card information belonging to 2.2 million PlayStation Network users for up to $100,000. Kevin Stevens, senior threat research at Trend Micro, said one forum member told him they offered to sell the data back to Sony but did not receive a response.
According to a blog post made by Sony today,
“The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken.”
Sony has said however that they cannot rule out the possibility that users’ credit card data may have been obtained by the hackers. It is rumored that the hackers obtained access to Sony’s database by first hacking the PS3 which then gave them a route to later exploit Sony’s servers.
