A Chilean Air Force airplane that crashed and killed 21 people was located thanks to Apple’s Find My iPhone feature that lets you remotely locate your device using the phone’s GPS receiver. A relative of one of the victims tried locating the person’s phone after rescue teams were unable to find the airplane. The relative was able to pull up the victim’s iPhone and shared the location information with those in charge of the search. According to a military official:
“One of the passengers carried (an iPhone). When it fell into the sea, it was located and one of the relatives sent us that information.”
The airplane, a CASA 212, was ultimately located with no surviving passengers.
