In the quarterfinals, Ghana was poised to take a late lead against Uruguay when Luis Suarez decided to prevent a goal by illegally using his hands to stop the ball from crossing over the goal line. Uruguay would go on to win the match and advance to the semifinals, but Suarez was suspended due to the red card he received on the play and Uruguay failed to advance to the finals.
