the United States Women’s National Team had not lost to Mexico since 2010 heading into Monday’s Concacaf W Gold Cup group stage match, but Mexico was able to pull off the stunning upset, beating the USWNT by a score of 2-0. And interim head coach Twila Kilgore had a lot to say about it after the game.
During her postgame press conference, Twila Kilgore pointed out that as the sport of women’s soccer grows worldwide, there is more parity in the sport which means more chances for an elite team to stumble and lose.
“It just shows how far the game is coming and there’s no easy games anymore,” Kilgore said after the game according to ESPN. “If we don’t take care of business and we don’t execute, this is to be expected. We’ll step up and take ownership of that.”
This marks just the team’s second-ever loss to Mexico as the team entered Monday night’s game with a 40-1-1 record in the rivalry.
“I think they had a good game plan, I think we had a good game plan. Simply, they just executed theirs better than ours,” Kilgore said. “Part of that does have to do with intensity but generally can be measured by things like tempo with the ball, but also defensive things like winning first tackles and winning second balls.”
With the loss, the USWNT finished second in the group while Mexico won the group.
