Heading into Monday night’s Concacaf W Gold Cup group with Mexico, the United States Women’s National Team had absolutely dominated their Concacaf rivals, holding a 40-1-1 record over Mexico with that lone loss coming all the way back in 2010. But in a rather stunning turn of events, Mexico was able to defeat the United States on Tuesday.
With goals from Lizbeth Ovalle and Mayra Pelayo, Mexico was able to defeat the United States for the first time in nearly a decade and a half, topping the USWNT by a score of 2-0.
With the victory, Mexico won Group A with seven points while the USWNT finished second in the group with six points. Argentina finished third in Group A with four points while the Dominican Republic was last with no points.
Mexico coach Pedro Lopez remains undefeated in all competitions since 2023 as he has turned the team into a dominant squad since taking over in 2022.
Despite the loss, the United States has still qualified for the quarterfinal stage of the inaugural W Gold Cup. And following the tournament, the United States will be joined by their next full-time head coach as Chelsea boss Emma Hayes will take over the USWNT and try to get things turned around after a disappointing stretch.
