Earlier this month, Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara caused quite a stir when he refused to participate in the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s (LFP) anti-homophobia initiative, covering up the initiative’s patches with tape and refusing to take part in a group photo. And as a result, he has been given some severe punishment.
After refusing to take part in the anti-homophobia initiative, Mohamed Camara has been banned for four matches by the LFP – a strong punishment for his actions against the LGBTQ community.
“After hearing the player Mohamed Camara and taking note of his refusal during the session to carry out one or more awareness-raising actions in the fight against homophobia, the Commission decides to impose a firm suspension of four matches on him,” the LFP said in a statement.
Monaco, meanwhile, has decided not to fight the suspension or aid Camara in his hearing.
“We take note of the decision of the League which we respect and we will not appeal this decision,” Monaco general manager Thiago Scuro said in a statement.
Scuro, however, did defend his player a little bit.
“Mo has his religious reasons to do what he did. As you can imagine, it is a very sensitive topic to discuss as we have to respect religion,” Scuro said.
Now, he will face a significant suspension to begin next season.
