Welp. Lionel Messi could be facing prison time during the prime of his career. From the Guardian:

A Spanish court will push ahead with prosecuting the Barcelona forward Lionel Messi for alleged tax evasion despite a recommendation from the public prosecutor the charges be dismissed.”

Apparently, Messi and his father have been accused of defrauding the Spanish state by filing false returns from 2006 to 2009. Messi currently makes about $40 million per season, according to Forbes. That $40 million does not include the millions that he brings in from sponsorship deals.

Here’s hoping Messi isn’t proven guilty and we can watch him tear up European soccer for years to come. And, because it’s ridiculously hard to write a post about Messi without a GIF, here is a wonderful goal from the Argentinian. Enjoy:
