An excellent performance in the 2014 World Cup likely earned DeAndre Yedlin a shot in the English Premier League. Tottenham signed the Seattle Sounders and U.S. Men’s National Team defender to a 4-year deal, beginning with the 2015-16 season.
Yedlin will be loaned back to his MLS team in the meantime until joining the London club for next season. The Seattle native and product of the Sounders academy jumped further onto the national scene in Brazil with two inspiring performances off the bench again Portugal and Belgium.
Yedlin spoke with Tottenham’s official website regarding the move:
I’m very excited to join the Premier League and challenge myself against some of the best players in the world. I’ve talked to Jurgen Klinsmann a lot about this move and he supports it, which was one of the big reasons behind the decision.
No one is surprised that Klinsmann is encouraging U.S players to leave the MLS, as the national team coach has been very vocal for his support of better competition in the English Premier League.
Yedlin’s decision to sign with Tottenham ended weeks of rumors that the 21-year-old might jump to the EPL. Unfortunately for him, it does not appear Ted Lasso will be his coach.
