When the United States Women’s National Team lost its match against Sweden on Sunday, ending its run through the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, an extremely confusing scene unfolding on social media as conservatives across the country flooded social networks celebrating the team’s loss, including former United States President Donald Trump.
Many conservatives claimed to be actively rooting against the United States Women’s National Team throughout the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, claiming that the group was “anti-American” and “woke” due in large part to the political and social activism from star Megan Rapinoe as well as the decision from some players to remain silent during the playing of the national anthem before games.
And as a result, many conservatives bizarrely celebrated the U.S. team’s loss on Sunday afternoon.

Former United States President Donald Trump also took to social media to celebrate the team’s loss – and blame Joe Biden.
“The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to the our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden. Many of our players were openly hostile to America – No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close. WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
It’s worth noting that despite the claims from many conservatives, no player on the team was explicitly protesting anything during the national anthem at this World Cup. In fact, there’s no real evidence that their silence during the national anthem was even an intentional move designed to send a message in any way. After all, it’s not uncommon for athletes to choose to simply stand respectfully instead of singing.
But most of these people clearly have little use for facts.
