Nick Saban, one of the greatest college football coaches in the sport’s history, retired last week after a disappointing season with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Many are wondering what comes next for the seven-time national championship coach. If it goes the way some want, Saban will enter politics and challenge former Auburn Tigers coach Tommy Tuberville for his Alabama Senate seat.
“Nick Saban for US Senate. Save us from Tommy Tuberville one more time,” Alabama political reporter Josh Moon wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We officially second this,” Alabama Democrats wrote on X.
Saban largely eschewed politics throughout his career. Originally hailing from West Virginia, however, Saban touted his childhood friendship with Joe Manchin, the state’s senior Senator, and endorsed him in his 2018 campaign.
If it comes to fruition, however, Alabama Democrats will certainly hope it goes better than Saban’s one meeting with Tuberville on the field.
The two met in the 2007 Iron Bowl, with Tuberville’s Tigers topping Saban’s Tide in his first year with the Tide.
Tuberville made stops with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Cincinnati Bearcats before winning a seat in the United States Senate in 2020. He isn’t up for re-election until 2026.
Only time will tell if Saban makes a move into politics.
