Former NBA player Kwame Brown has reinvented himself as a culture commentator on social media.
In his most recent video, the former No. 1 overall draft pick takes aim at what he calls Black “gatekeepers” whom he says are “shaming” people into voting for Vice President Kamala Harris solely based on the color of her skin.
Brown names comedians Ricky Smiley, DL Hughley and Steve Harvey as offenders.
“When you talk about real situations, people are not concerned with somebody being Black or not. You’re not paying nobody’s bills with your skin color. Kamala Harris is not going to help get your bills paid just cuz she’s Black.”

“Inflation is at an all-time high. And when you go and look at the politicians – and this is what’s said about Ricky Smiley, DL Hughley, Steve Harvey, is that nobody calls these gatekeepers out,” Brown said.
The tirade was seemingly in response to Ricky Smiley, who blasted Black voters for not backing Vice President Harris, going as far to advise his listeners to unfollow anyone on social media who met that criteria.
“I’m just sick of the Black people on the internet talking about, ’I’m not with [Ms. Harris].’ OK, so if you’re not with her, that means you’re with Trump,” Smiley said on his radio show. “Y’all need to block every last one of their asses on Facebook and on Instagram and social media — and stop. That’s just garbage.”
Smiley, Hughley or Harvey did not immediately respond to the blast from Brown.
