Several U.S. sports leagues feature Canadian teams, with the NBA and MLB each having one, while MLS and the NHL host multiple franchises in Canada. The U.S. and Canada share a long history of peaceful collaboration and a robust partnership. However, if U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump’s vision becomes a reality, Canada could potentially become part of the United States.

Fox News reported this month that during a recent discussion with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Donald Trump proposed that Canada could become the 51st state, with Trudeau serving as the governor.

In a 3:30 a.m. post on his Truth Social, Donald Trump reiterated this idea, making the unsupported claim that “many Canadians” want Canada to be annexed by the United States.

“No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Unsurprisingly, this suggestion sparked considerable outrage amongst the social media world.

“Being a good neighbor, trade partner and ally with US is all that Canadians want. Let’s ask Americans if they’d prefer to become Canada’s 11th province. Think of the universal healthcare, no mass shootings, fresh water and prime minister who sleeps at night,” former Canadian Deputy Premier and Cabinet Minister Thomas A. Lukaszuk wrote on X.

“While you were sleeping, at 3:30 am Donald Trump, once again talked about annexing Canada to the US. Totally normal and not crazy at all,” another person wrote on X.

“If $100 million makes you a US state, Trump is going to have to eminent-domain Elon Musk who gets several hundred times that very round number in US government subsidies,” someone else pointed out.

“The orange ignoramus would have better luck buying Greenland,” another remarked.

“Here we go again on this one,” someone else commented.

“As a Canadian I’d be upset, even angry. But then I feel sorry for Americans who’ve elected a president who has a pathetic need for attention and is gripped by an equally pathetic fantasy that he is strong. Plus, he is going to end up doing worse to Americans than to us,” another person added.

“He’s insane,” someone simply stated.

While the likelihood of this happening seems incredibly low, it’s now evident that Trump is quite serious about his suggestion.
