A star performer in the controversial opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games has a blunt message for Christian critics.
French drag performer Karl Sanchez, more popularly known by his stage name Nicky Doll, took to Instagram on Monday morning to respond to anyone offended by the display of queerness on the world stage.
“The opening ceremony did ruffle some feathers… and I LOVE it,” Doll wrote on Instagram Stories. “You know why? Because the Olympics are the biggest stage in the world and us queer people have always been the audience of other people’s life and achievement and it is time that we are welcome in the space.”
The Catholic Church and other Christian organizations took offense to what they viewed as a skit mocking “The Last Supper” with Jesus and his 12 disciples. But Doll had a message for anyone offended, too.
“And remember, to the ones that had their feathers ruffled seeing queerness on their screen: WE AIN’T GOING NOWHERE,”
A Paris Olympic Games spokesperson has since clarified that the skit was involving Dionysus, the Greek God of Wine, and not Jesus Christ, the King of Zion. The goal was community inclusion, not mocking of any religion.
“We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry,” the spokeswoman said.
