Over the past several weeks, wildfires have spread through Los Angeles County, destroying thousands of homes and businesses while claiming at least 27 lives – totals that continue to rise as the fires continue to burn. It’s one of the worst disasters ever to hit the city, and it did not come at a good time as the city prepares to host the 2028 Olympics.
The tragic and devastating disaster, coupled with the response from California, has led some to suggest that the Olympics should be moved elsewhere.
During a recent interview with NewsMax, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio suggested that the Olympics should be moved to a Republican-controlled city and state.
“I do think the American people rightly see how poorly that state is being run, how poorly these tragic fires have been handled by the governor and, of course, the mayor there in Los Angeles,” Jordan said according to Fox News.
Conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk expressed a similar sentiment, suggesting Dallas or Miami as a replacement city.
“The Los Angeles Olympics should be canceled,” Kirk wrote on X. “If you can’t fill a fire hydrant, you aren’t qualified to host the Olympics. Move them to Dallas, or Miami, so the world’s athletes can compete in a place capable of actually safely building and running something.”
Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he – along with new president Donald Trump – is already moving forward with “a Marshall plan” to prepare the city for the Olympics, saying it is an opportunity for Trump “to shine.”
“President Donald Trump was helpful in getting the Olympics to the United States of America — to get it down here in LA. We thank him for that. This is an opportunity for him to shine, for this country to shine, for California and this community to shine,” Newsom said.
“That’s why we’re already organizing a Marshall plan. We already have a team looking, reimagining LA 2.0, and we’re making sure everyone’s included.”
We’ll have to see how the city moves forward after such a devastating disaster.
