One of the best hockey names in the history of the sport has hung up the skates.
Zigmund “Ziggy” Palffy has retired from professional hockey today. Palffy, a prolific scorer during his prime, spent time with the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Palffy has been playing in his native Slovakia for the past five seasons. Despite being one of the oldest players in the Slovak Extraliga, Ziggy still managed to light it up — scoring 73 points in 39 games.
Ziggy was one of the most underrated pure scorers in a generation that included greats like Brett Hull, Mike Modano, and Jaromir Jagr. In 684 NHL contests Palffy scored better than a point-per-game, ending his career with 713 points.
In 1996-97 Palffy scored a career high 48 goals for the Isles.
