Canada was able to squeak by Latvia in their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, but not without suffering a big loss. Team Canada and forward John Tavares left the game in the second period after suffering a lower body injury stemming from a knee-on-knee hit from a Latvian player.
After the game, Canada coach Mike Babcock revealed that Tavares will miss the rest of the Olympics because of the injury.
Not only worrisome news for the Canadians, but also for Tavares’ Islanders as well.
UPDATE (2/20/14): Tavares will reportedly miss the remainder of the NHL season as a result of damage suffered to the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee. The center will undergo an MRI this week to see if surgery is required, but the initial test on Tavares’s knee “does not look good.” [CBC]
