Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf threw the biggest hit of the night in Tuesday’s slate of NHL action. Unfortunately for Phaneuf, the victim on the receiving end happened to be his own teammate.
The intended recipient was Sharks forward Patrick Marleau but Phaneuf completely failed at lining up the hit on Marleau and wound up delivering a high hit on JVR, who was shaken up as a result. It was a pretty amusing sequence, but also a scary one because you never want to see guys injured like that.
Fortunately, JVR returned to the game after undergoing tests in the locker room.
It’s important to note that this is the SECOND time Phaneuf has inadvertantly taken out his own teammate on the ice this season. Luckily for Phil Kessel, the first was much less brutal.
