The Washington Commanders moved away from their controversial “Redskins” logo and name back in 2020, but it appears the team is considering embracing the logo once again in some capacity.

This week, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, who has been a strong proponent of bringing back the old logo, told Fox News America Reports that the team is moving towards embracing the logo once again.

“There’s good faith in negotiations going forward that’s going to allow this logo to be used again,” Daines said, according to Sporting News.

The Washington Post reported that while the team is not looking to use the logo on its uniforms or as its primary logo and is not considering incorporating it in a full rebranding effort, the team has informed Wetzel’s family that the logo will be used on throwback merchandise.

“In September, Commanders and NFL representatives visited the family in Montana and hosted them in Maryland to unveil a memorial to Wetzel. The family and team have also discussed creating a foundation to support Native American causes, though details have not been finalized, and the team has assured the family it will no longer edit out the old logo from throwback gear,” the Washington Post reported earlier this month.

Needless to say, this is a pretty significant move from the team, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media.

The logo was never offensive but you can’t go back to being called the ‘Redskins’ imo,” one fan wrote on X.

“The logo isn’t the problem. People overreacted. I’ve always said keep the logo, call them the Washington Warriors. Sounds better than commanders, rolls off the tongue better, and is a great name to bring pride to the tribe represented,” another fan wrote.

“So much drama. The logo wasn’t ever inherently the issue – it’s that ‘Redskins’ might be the most insane idea for a name in modern sports,” another fan added.

“They should bring back the logo and change the name to the Warriors. Commanders is such an awful name and feels like they tried too hard to run away from the previous name and logo,” someone else said.

“They need to leave it the way it is. I didn’t think they needed to change at all but all this constant changing is unfair to the fans of the team,” another fan wrote.

Since abandoning the name and logo in 2020, the team has refrained from using the old logo on any merchandise, including throwback items.
