The Dallas Cowboys will likely be without their star quarterback, Dak Prescott, for the next several weeks due to a hamstring injury. In his absence, Cooper Rush started Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles, but it sounds like the team might name a new starting quarterback this week.
While Cooper Rush began the game on Sunday, he certainly did not perform well in the loss.
Rush completed just 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards in the blowout loss to the Eagles, ultimately leading to him being benched for third-string quarterback Trey Lance.
Lance didn’t do much better, completing 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards along with an interception. However, the team appears to be considering Lance as a potential starter for next week.
Following the game, head coach Mike McCarthy indicated he was not ready to commit to Lance as Prescott’s replacement, citing a lack of practice reps for Lance to fully operate the offense.
“We’re not there yet,” McCarthy said in his press conference. “I mean, we had a package for him. We wanted to get him into the flow of the game was the thought process coming in here. Then to get him in when we did, then I took him out on the third down.”
Still, McCarthy suggested the team would “discuss” the possibility of a change.
“I just believe in reps,” McCarthy explained. “I mean that third down segment there, not that he couldn’t run the plays, I just didn’t want to put him in there [for] something that he hadn’t had a lot of reps in. I put Cooper back in for that play, for third down, we had the fumble, the turnover there. Something I’ll obviously discuss tomorrow.”
Needless to say this possibility led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“Just start the kid and give him some real reps. Not winning anything either way,” one fan wrote on X.
“Decided to put him in when you’re down 30 is wild,” another fan added.
“Time to see what he’s got,” another fan wrote.
“Nothing to lose,” someone else said.
“How bad can he be?” another person said.
We’ll have to see what the Cowboys choose to do.
