Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence is due a new contract in the near future, and it sounds like the team would like to get that contract done sooner rather than later to eliminate all distractions as they prepare for the upcoming season.
During a recent interview, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson made it very clear that the team is prioritizing the contract extension with Trevor Lawrence so that they can move on and “focus on football.”
“Obviously, the sooner you get it done, it’s behind everybody and now we focus on football,” Pederson said according to Pro Football Talk. “And so that’s not lingering, and that’s not out there. I know Trent [Baalke] and [Lawrence’s] agent, they’ve continued to talk, and will talk, and they’re working hard and tirelessly. I’ve just got to coach Trevor and coach football and hopefully it gets done — and it will.”
Lawrence was selected by the team with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He is now heading into his fourth season as the team’s starting quarterback, but it’s clear the Jaguars would like to keep him for the foreseeable future – it’s now just a matter of finalizing a contract.
